Project Description
This project converts treated sargassum into an organic fertilizer to improve soil health while sustainably managing excess coastal biomass.
This project aims to sustainably manage recurring sargassum influxes by converting collected and treated seaweed into a safe, nutrient-rich organic fertilizer for agricultural use. Through a process of washing, drying, and controlled composting or bio-processing, excess salts and potential contaminants are removed to produce a soil-enhancing product that improves moisture retention, nutrient availability, and overall soil structure.

Context / Problem Description
Recurring influxes of sargassum along Caribbean coastlines have created significant environmental and economic challenges. When left to accumulate, decomposing sargassum releases harmful gases, damages marine ecosystems, and places pressure on already strained waste management systems.
Project Approach
The project will collect sargassum from affected coastal areas and subject it to washing, drying, and controlled processing to remove excess salts and contaminants. The treated biomass will then be composted or converted into liquid and solid organic fertilizer through established bio-processing methods.
Project Objective
To develop and validate a safe, locally produced organic fertilizer from treated sargassum that improves soil health, reduces reliance on imported synthetic inputs, and promotes sustainable agricultural practices.
